Daniel had his first dental appointment today. In preparation, we took a book out of the library called "Harry and the Dinosaurs Say Raaagh!" about a boy who goes to the dentist for the first time and brings his toy dinosaurs. We also watched some videos about caring for your teeth and visiting the dentist on the Sesame Street website.
Daniel didn't seem nervous at all. He did get a little shy when Ms. Lisa, his hygienist, introduced herself, but Ms. Lisa is a pro at working with kids. She was silly and fun. And there was a television with cartoons on he could watch while she cleaned his teeth. Daniel climbed into the big chair and Ms. Lisa showed him all the instruments she was going to use. Daniel got to squirt the water and air and feel the special toothbrush on his hand. Ms. Lisa put on the bib and some fun sunglasses on Daniel so the light wouldn't bother him. Daniel was great! He opened wide and let Ms. Lisa count his teeth, clean them with the special toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste, and put on some strawberry fluoride. He even stood perfectly still while Ms. Lisa took some digital pictures of his teeth.
Then Dr. Papsin came in, took a look and declared Daniel a great brusher and cavity free! Ms. Lisa gave Daniel a cool new toothbrush, 3 stickers and two tokens for the toy machine at the front desk. Daniel was smiling and chatting with Ms. Lisa by the end of the visit. She did a great job of making fun and not scary or uncomfortable at all. Daniel was a great listener and seemed to have fun during the visit. I'm so proud of my big boy Daniel!
