We signed Daniel up for the Nature with Threes winter session at the Sterling Heights Nature Center. This morning was his first class. Ms. Brenda from the Nature Center taught the class. Everyone sat on a big blanket around Ms. Brenda to hear here read a story. Daniel was feeling a little shy, so I sat down with the kids. After the story, Ms. Brenda talked about the four seasons and what winter was like. Then she told the kids about how different animals spend the winter, either hibernating, migrating, or toughing it out. Then we went to the big window to see the trees and bird feeders and saw some of the animals that tough it out during the winter. There we saw squirrels, cardinals and a rabbit.
Back in the classroom, they talked about foods that are good for you and foods that are not good for you. Then they got to meet a turtle named Speedy. Ms. Brenda offered Speedy a doughnut and a plate of bananas. Speedy went right for the bananas. Only good for you food for Speedy!
Finally, the kids all got to make a fluffy squirrel tail out of newspaper to wear and Ms. Brenda put whiskers on their faces and they all pretended they were squirrels.

Daniel had fun and is looking forward to next week's class when they will learn more about animals that hibernate.
